MOCAPE museum in Shenzhen is an urban icon designed to compromise the monumental aspirations of the program with the need to create a live public space well integrated into newly designed central axis of the city.
Monumentality is expressed by making a clear statement of basic elements of space, such as podium, roof, wall, and building core. Their composition is modern reinterpretation of a Chinese temple that is itself interpretation of the archetype of home, existential space that is connecting human and nature. As such, MOCAPE is intended to symbolize the home-temple of creative urban spirit.
Building interior is organized as a stack of huge column-free exhibition areas, with the private and administration zone in the back of the building. Dividing these two zones is the central core which comprises circulation, technical systems and main structure of the building, so the rest of the interior could remain clean.
Visitor access to exhibition areas is controlled by subway-like gates, and can be fully customized, so that visitors can purchase tickets to individual exhibitions or entire museum. Gate system is adopted to ease and make faster the circulation of expected huge number of visitors in a building size of almost one million square feet.
